Material-flow analysis

Understand how vehicles, goods and material actually move through your operation. The material-flow analysis makes routes, utilisation and bottlenecks visible from measured data – as a basis for well-founded decisions.

Which question should your material-flow analysis answer?

It starts not with the technology, but with the decision you want to make.

Choose a question to see what can be used to investigate it.

Case example

When measured data corrects an assumption

Not every presumed bottleneck is actually the biggest point of load. A measurement is the basis for confirming or correcting assumptions.

  • Plant roadMeasured share of the metres driven8%
  • Main roadMeasured share of the metres driven26.6%

Figures from one specific project — not averages.

The customer went into the project with a clear assumption: a particular plant road carried the main load and had to be refurbished.

The value lay not in the amount of data but in correcting an assumption that affects costs before money went into the wrong measure. Facts can confirm or correct an assumption. Both are a result.

More on the material-flow analysis

The case study shows six weeks of GPS in an example plant, with maps, figures and recommendations. The one-pager sums up the analysis on two pages. You get both for free via a short form.

  • Plant traffic made visible

This is the start of the case study. After you submit the form you go straight to the full case study.

  • Material-flow analysis one-pager

You can see the first page here. We will send you the full document by email.

Five steps. Eight to twelve weeks.

From the question to the data-based decision brief.

  1. Define the questions

Agree together which questions are investigated and which decisions are to be supported.

What do we need from you?
  • Support with fitting the telematics
  • An agreed tracker quota for third-party traffic
  • ERP data deliveries before collection starts

The exact arrangement is set in the service specification. These three points decide whether the collection becomes reliable.

What we can measure – and what has been tried in practice

Not everything that is technically possible has already run in a project. We mark the difference.

  • Case example

    Outdoor positioning

Where are the vehicles, which routes are really used?

Via GPS on the internal fleet and loan trackers in third-party traffic.

over three million positions from 41 vehiclesFigures from a project
  • Case example

    Material flow and tonnage

What goes from where to where, and how much?

Transport relations and the quantity transported are captured.

    21,465 t across 43 transport relationsFigures from a project
  • Case example

    Road network and annual load

    Which section carries which load?

The sections are classified A, B and C.

22 sections over 2,820 mFigures from a project
  • Case example

    Third-party traffic on site

How do haulage trucks burden the plant, where do they stop?

Not every third-party vehicle carries a tracker; in one project it was about every second truck entering. Absolute figures on third-party traffic are therefore lower bounds of what was captured.

over 30 loan trackers, 717 licence plates and 1,050 gate visitsFigures from a project
  • Case example

    Storage-location distances

Is the material where it is needed?

The distance between storage location and point of use is looked at per material group.

one material group on average 174 m from the point of use, another 11 mFigures from a project
  • No project carried out yet

    Indoor positioning

Can be connected technically via Flowcate using the omlox standard.

There is no project carried out for it yet — we would rather say so beforehand than afterwards.

Data, insights and a well-founded basis for decisions

  • Movement data and visualisations

Maps, heatmaps and other analyses make material flows visible.

  • Decision brief

The results are related to the original question and supplemented by recommendations and validation steps.

  • Data sovereignty

Raw data owned by the customer

The raw data collected belongs to the customer. Access to the analysis tool is tied to the project and limited in time.

And after the project?

The telematics installed can, where applicable, continue to be used for ongoing fleet operation afterwards. Switching to ForkX is optional and the subject of a separate offer. The material-flow analysis remains a service in its own right.

Frequently asked questions and limits of the material-flow analysis

  • Does the analysis prove why a bottleneck arises?

No. The analysis shows patterns and delivers verifiable indications. The actual causes may have to be confirmed through further validation.

  • Are all vehicles captured completely?

Not necessarily. How meaningful the result is depends on the actual capture rate and the measurement concept. Extrapolations and their basis have to be documented traceably.

  • Can the analysis replace a risk assessment?

No. Traffic data can point to relevant areas but does not replace a risk assessment.

  • Are empty runs automatically inefficient?

No. The analysis can make the share of empty runs visible. Whether an empty run is avoidable depends on the process in question.

  • Does ForkOn implement the recommended measures directly?

The analysis delivers data, evaluations and recommendations. Implementing organisational or technical measures is up to the customer or the partners commissioned.
